Aeromodelling can be a variable and exciting hobby for all, irrespective of age or gender. To the young, it offers a healthy and very educational pastime. Subjects like aerodynamics, theory of flight, aircraft design, electronics, engines, wooden constructions, new materials etc. are taught.
The Cyprus Airsports Federation (C.A.F.) has four Clubs in its membership, which engage in Aeromodelling. One is in Nicosia, one in Limassol, one at Paralimni and one in Pafos. The Nicosia Aeromodellers fly from the Nicosia Aeromodelling Field, 2 km West of the village of Kotsiatis; the Limassol Aeroclub members from Ladies Mile seashore whilst in Paralimni an Aeromodelling Field has been constructed at the Paralimni Salt Lake. There is also a field in Kato Pafos.
These clubs offer a simplified and safe hobby for their members. In recent years, models, equipment and methods of construction have improved considerably through technological advancements.
As an indication, the funds necessary for someone to get started in Aeromodelling range between 300 to 500 Cyprus pounds. For this amount one can acquire a training model ready for take off. The package will include engine, servos, receiver, transmitter, and battery. It will also include a carry case with the various aeromodelling tools and the battery with the starter and fuel.
Under the auspices of C.A.F. annual championships are held in 6 categories. The champions represent Cyprus in European and World championships that are organized under the auspices of the World Airsport Federation.
